Welcome to the
Mel Fisher Maritime Museum Education Department
The Museum has an extensive assembly of educational programming in place to educate area school-aged children about science, area marine life, underwater archeology and the fine arts. The philosophy of the education program is multi-fold: to serve as an interpretive link to the Museum's exhibits and collections and to
share our expertise of our curators with the community of Monroe County. We also wish to stimulate learning and to reach out to all segments of the community. These elements of this philosophy create an exciting, useful and energetic approach to our educational programming.

Boat Building 2004
Revive the boat building heritage of
Key West! The Mel Fisher Maritime Museum MER ACADEMY is cooperating
with Key Education, Inc and Bone Island Boatworks to offer FAMILY
BOAT BUILDING. MER ACADEMY will sponsor at least one team. This is an
international event that was started by Wooden
Boat magazine in 1998 when
60 families in St. Michaels, MD built their own boats in two days and
launched them on the third day to thunderous applause from onlookers.
The goal this year is to have events scheduled in 100 communities – Key
West being one of them. Learn more about this from
here or at their website www.familyboatbuilding.com.
