MEL FISHER MARITIME MUSEUM ANNOUNCES “ MER ACADEMY ” SUMMER CAMP FOR KIDS 

Monroe County elementary and middle school students can do water quality sampling and arts and crafts, explore area parks, become detectives through individual projects related to maritime history, archaeology, and conservation, and increase their knowledge of math and science by participating in the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum ’s Mer Academy .

This annual summer camp will be offered for five weeks this summer – June 1 to July 2, 2004.  The core session runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays –Fridays during this five-week period.  Participants may enroll for any or all of the five week sessions at $150 per week.  Students from grade levels third through sixth grade are eligible.  Thanks to support from Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, scholarship assistance is available to qualified families.  On request and by arrangement, an Extended Day will be available to accommodate parents’ work schedules.  Cost of the extended day is $170 per week.

Students will enjoy both the educational and behind-the-scenes spaces at the Museum, as well as daily outside activities and weekly field trips.  Drop-off will be at the front entry of the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum at 200 Greene Street .  Each student should bring a lunch, refillable water bottle, and personal or library book for daily quiet-time reading.  Those enrolled for the extended day will have time to work on guided inquiry projects with the subject of the student’s choice.  For many of the core session learning endeavors, boys and girls will be offered separate instruction.  Water quality sampling with lab analysis and art activities will occur daily. 

There is a 5% discount for members of the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum and a 5% discount for siblings enrolling together during the same week(s).  The cutoff date for discounts is May 28.  Full payment is expected by the Wednesday preceding the week of participation.

At lunchtime students and faculty will be transported to local parks for exploration, lunch and recreation.  Afternoons and pick-up will be at the Montessori School ’s campus located at 1221 Varela Street .  Thursdays will be field trip day.  Parents will be advised of field trip opportunities – no field trip further away than Marathon .  Every Friday a brief progress report will be sent home with the student.
