"DIVING INTO GLORY" BOOK SIGNING ON TUESDAY, MARCH 15

KEY WEST - A new book recounting the story of the shipwreck of the 1622 Spanish treasure galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha” off the coast of Key West will be unveiled at a book signing at the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum on Tuesday, March 15.

Author Carol Shaughnessy has written the book “Diving Into Glory” to coincide with the 20th anniversary this year of the discovery of the Atocha’s Main Pile of artifacts.  She also tells the stories of the Santa Margarita, Henrietta Marie, and the St. Johns Wreck.  All were discovered by Mel Fisher and the underwater archaeologists who carried on his vision.  The book also showcases the incredible archeological and conservation work performed by the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society.

The book signing, from 6:00 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15 at the Museum at 200 Greene Street, is open to the public.  The museum’s exhibits will be open to those attending the book signing.

Carol Shaughnessy began a love affair with Key West in the late 1970s.  She has written about the island for national, regional and local publications including “Islands” and “Touring America,” and is the editorial director of “Key Wester” magazine.

The co-director of the Lorian Hemingway Short Story competition, Shaughnessy is the author of the mini-book “Phases of the Moon” and the as-yet-unpublished novels “Song of Second Chances” and “Sierra Valley Serenade.”

Shaughnessy has worked as a publicist with Stuart Newman Associates, the media relations firm for the Florida Keys and Key West tourism council, for the past six years.  Previously, she provided publicity support for the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society, and was part of the team that launched the Society’s groundbreaking exhibition “A Slave Ship Speaks” focusing on the Henrietta Marie shipwreck.

“This book…has been a labor of love, memorializing Mel Fisher’s indefatigable spirit and his rich gift to the world,” according to the Museum’s executive director, Dr. Madeleine Burnside.

The Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society and Museum is a 501 c (3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to the research, preservation and education for New World History.  Founded in 1982, it has been accredited by the American Association of Museums and is the most visited non-profit history museum in the southeastern United States.
