MEL FISHER MARITIME MUSEUM AWARDED $50,000 GRANT FOR CONSERVATION

A high-density mobile storage system will provide the optimum environment for the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum ’s collection of small and delicate artifacts from shipwrecks through a grant recently approved by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

The $50,000 grant, one of two awarded to museums in Florida this year, will rehouse these artifacts, including musket balls and small glass beads.  Much of the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum’s important conservation work goes on behind the scenes and the IMLS, an independent federal grant-making agency dedicated to creating and sustaining a nation of learners by helping libraries and museums serve their communities, makes such grants to worthy institutions to make possible and heighten public awareness of such conservation work.  The museum provided a match of $55,697 for this project.

The Mel Fisher Maritime Museum is an independent not-for-profit 501 c (3) organization that is nationally-accredited by the American Association of Museums, dedicated to the exhibition, education, archaeology, preservation and research of our maritime history in the New World .  It is the most visited nonprofit history museum in the southeastern United States.
