Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Registration Now Open for After-school and Saturday Classes at Mel Fisher Maritime Museum

Thanks to the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society, this fall Keys parents won’t have to listen to their children lamenting, “Mom! Dad! There’s nothing to do!” Jane Rohrschneider, director of the Society’s education department, has devised a series of after-school and Saturday class activities designed to intrigue, entertain, and educate Keys kids from ages 6 to 13.

Registration is now open for the class sessions, which will begin in mid-October and run through mid-December. Classes will focus primarily on the arts and sciences, while four separate Adventure Days planned for the same time period will provide young people with maritime and ecological experiences.

“Our mission as a center for research and discovery includes creating educational programs for the community’s young people,” explains Rohrschneider. “These classes are an outgrowth of the Society’s popular Buccaneer’s Club and Buccaneer Camp, and we’re delighted to be able to offer them this fall.”

Classes include Paper in Paradise, introducing children to paper arts including making masks and mosaics; Investigate Drawing, which will unlock students’ artistic talents and teach the five basic drawing skills; Let’s Create a Masterpiece, allowing children to experience painting, sculpting, and making wall hangings and masks; Puppets-Spanish Style, focusing on the art and science of puppet design as well as improving Spanish skills; and Art for All Ages, which involves parents or older family members in both the class and the creative process. Each series of art classes will culminate in a public showcase of the students’ work.

Children interested in science will also have a chance to have fun and learn this fall as the Society offers Adventures in Science. Students will conduct their own scientific experiments on subjects ranging from electricity to photosynthesis.

In addition to the regular class sessions, children are invited to experience four Adventure Days—full-day excursions that take them on fascinating voyages of discovery. They’ll journey to Dry Tortugas National Park courtesy of Yankee Fleet’s Dry Tortugas National Park Ferry, explore the Nature Conservancy’s preserve on Little Torch Key, discover the history of Key West through an informative walking tour, and learn to identify the trees of Key West.

Regular classes cost $7.50 per hour or less, with between eight and ten two- to three-hour classes in each series. Costs include light refreshments; an additional small fee may be charged for supplies or materials. If siblings sign up together, a 10% discount is applied for the second and subsequent children in the same family. In addition, children of Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society members also receive a 10% discount. Scholarships may be available in cases of financial need. Registration for Adventure Days is separate; costs are $45 per excursion and include transportation, lunch and snacks, and any entrance fees.

Class sizes are limited, so early registration is suggested for this fall’s exciting series of classes and Adventure Days presented by the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society. For a complete schedule of class times, curriculums, and costs, please call Jane Rohrschneider at the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum (294-2633, x. 20).
