Organizes Schooner
Wolf Adventure for Keys Kids
Thirty-five
Keys kids enjoyed a special post-hurricane sail aboard
the Schooner Wolf on the afternoon of October 2. Organized by the Mel
Fisher Maritime Heritage Society’s education
department to ease the stress following the storm, the
trip was free to the children—thanks to Captain Finbar
Gittelman and Julie McEnroe of the Schooner
Wolf, and supporting sponsor George Murphy. The
young participants (pictured here) particularly enjoyed
firing the Wolf’s cannon, getting a view of Fort Zachary Taylor from the
water, sampling snacks from Walgreen’s, and observing
the Wolf’s Captain Linda Schuh and her all-female crew—who dressed
as pirates for the high-seas adventure.

Tortugas
Adventure for Keys Kids
Fourteen
Keys kids, aged 8 to 15, recently enjoyed a day-long
trip to Dry Tortugas National Park and Fort Jefferson
aboard Yankee Fleet’s Dry Tortugas National Park
Ferry. Organized by the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage
Society’s education department as a special Buccaneer
Adventure Day, the trip was free to the
children—thanks to Captain Jerry Hill of Yankee Fleet.
During their voyage, the young participants (pictured
here aboard the ferry) learned about the area’s
history and ecology from Yankee Fleet naturalist/guide
Jack Hackett, visited the 100-foot ferry’s bridge
under the watchful eye of Captain Rick Gauron, and
passed over the site of the sunken Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha. Their adventure also included a guided
tour of historic Fort Jefferson—including a visit to
the cell of the infamous Dr. Samuel Mudd—and an
opportunity to snorkel in the clear waters of the
remote, pristine national park.
