TOWER
OF LONDON’S ANGUS KONSTAM NAMED CURATOR OF
MEL
FISHER MARITIME HERITAGE SOCIETY MUSEUM
Internationally
recognized weapons expert Angus Konstam has accepted an
appointment as chief curator of the Mel Fisher Maritime
Heritage Society Museum in Key West, Florida. Konstam is
the former Curator of Weapons of the Royal Armouries at
Her Majesty’s Tower of London in Great Britain.
A
consultant on collections of historic weapons throughout
Europe— including Russia—Konstam worked on a joint
exhibition project between the Tower of London and the
Kremlin museum. He has also served as a consulting
maritime archeologist for excavations in Scotland,
Wales, and England, and published several books. Konstam
holds a Masters degree in History from Aberdeen
University, a Masters in Maritime Studies from St.
Andrews University, and a Masters in Museum Studies from
London’s University College.
The
Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society, founded in 1982,
is a nonprofit organization dedicated to exhibition,
education, archaeology, preservation, and research of
Spanish and colonial maritime activity in the New World.
Its museum holds the richest single collection of
17th-century maritime and shipwreck antiquities in the
Western Hemisphere.
Prior
to accepting the curatorship, Konstam assisted society
archaeologists in identifying and authenticating weapons
found on the shipwreck of the English merchant slave
vessel Henrietta
Marie. The only slave shipwreck ever to be
identified, excavated, and studied, the Henrietta
Marie forms the basis for the society’s landmark
exhibition on the slave trade—now embarking on a
four-year national tour.
