FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MFMHS
After-School Buccaneers’ Club
Announces
Spring Schedule for Fun
There
are four adventure-filled sessions scheduled for the Mel
Fisher Maritime Heritage Society’s Buccaneers’ Club
in the spring of 1998. Boys and girls, aged seven
through ten, are invited to sail into adventure by
joining the popular after-school activity club, which
meets from 3 to 5 p.m.—with four convenient weekly
sessions to choose from. Participants will be able to
learn much about the uniqueness of Key West living,
explore the past and learn to preserve the future. Under
the auspices of the education department of MFMHS,
Buccaneers will observe Key West’s wildlife,
historical hideouts, artistic corners and natural nooks.
One
afternoon every week, kids can learn about the Keys’
maritime heritage through arts and crafts projects,
sailing trips, and other swashbuckling activities. The
Buccaneers’ Club explores the Keys from the inside out
with fun and educational projects that enhance the
children’s understanding of their unique community and
their own unique talents. In a new effort to provide
this fantastic opportunity to explore the beauty and
maritime excitement of Key West to younger children,
Thursdays in the program have been reserved as a special
day for five and six year olds only. The cost of $64 per
month includes all entrance fees, supplies, snacks and
transportation from Key West area schools to each
meeting. Campers travel in Buccaneer style on the Conch
Kids’ Commute van, which carries them to different
ports of call to spark their imaginations and foster
their creativity.
“Adventure
Days”, two extra-special day trips, will take place on
March 30 and May 11. The first is called the “Sea
Adventure” and gives kids six to ten years old the
chance to sail on an authentic Key West ship, travel to
the coral reef and learn timeless seamanship skills. On
the 11th of May, it’s “all ashore who’s goin’
ashore!” In the great tradition of the buccaneers of
old, who reveled in the chance to get off that boat,
“The Shore Excursion” is a day of fun on shore.
Participants will survey the Key West Lighthouse, maybe
try their luck with the Yo-Yo Wizard, or learn to
juggle. The fee for each of these additional events is
$45, which includes activity costs, transportation and
snacks. Organizers suggest a bag lunch.
The
Buccaneers’ Club meets at the Mel Fisher Maritime
Heritage Society’s Museum at 200 Greene Street.
Enrollment is limited, so immediate registration is
suggested. For details about early-bird registration
discounts and information, and a list of available
meeting days for nautical adventuring, call 294-2633,
ext. 20 or 21.
